The Evolution of Homosexuality in India

By : June 3, 2020 Comments Off
Homosexuality in India has been a subject of heavy discussion, ever since the beginning of time. Ancient Hindu texts have taken various other positions regarding homosexual characters and themes. According to the normal Indian text Kamasutra, written by Vātsyāyana, an entire chapter is dedicated to erotic homosexual behavior.  Homophobia is prevalent in India. Open discussion of homosexuality in India has been inhibited by the actual fact that sexuality in any form isn't discussed openly.  There aren't any official demographics for the LGBT population in India, but the government submitted figures to the Supreme Court in 2012, according to which, there are about 2.5 million gay people recorded in India, amounting to 13% of the population. These figures only reflect those individuals who have self-declared to the Ministry of Health. There

Falling in Love with My Best Friend

By : June 1, 2020 Comments Off
I met my best friend in college during Bible Study at the Newman Center across the street from the University.  Weekly, we would attend Bible Study and Sunday night mass.  The more I got to know her the more I wanted to know.  She was funny, but also serious, and deep. She had beautiful eyes, and short brown curly hair, and her smile was Pretty soon we started to study together, eat meals together, hang out, talk all night long, and I felt like I have known her forever.  Both of us were raised Catholic, were first generation college students, and Therapeutic Recreation majors.  Looking back, I think it was obvious to most people that we were dating.  However, we were both oblivious to what was happening.  I walked a different

Finding Your Labels

By : May 31, 2020 Comments Off
When I was in elementary school, there was an afternoon where my older sister approached me and said, “Do you know what a lesbian is?” I said that I didn’t know, and she told me that it’s a “girl who likes other girls.” I felt like my world had shifted. The fact that I could put a word to what I felt made my heart race. In my excitement, I later told my mom about this new piece of knowledge. She asked where I had heard it from, and I told her that my sister told me. I didn’t know it then, but a few years later I realized that my sister had gotten in trouble for introducing “lesbian” to my vocabulary. It’s already difficult to grow up non-cishet and

I am Non-Binary.

By : May 25, 2020 Comments Off
This is the deepest and most personal thing I’ve ever written. I am non-binary. It’s important for me to say it that way because this isn’t something that I’ve just now become, I have been non-binary since birth and for me, I do not in my core, soul, spirit, ether, etc. feel that I am fully one gender or the other. I am both and none. All of them.  Plus everything in-between; I am a grey area. So is life. I want those who read this to understand what I mean and try to empathize before breezing through my words. Stop, reflect, and just breathe. Understand for one moment what I am trying to express. Call it a selah moment if you want— whatever works. There’s no way to describe

Schizophrenia: Metamorphosing from Imagination to Reality

By : May 22, 2020 Comments Off
Trigger warning: this article discusses mental health and violent behavior. The medical definition of 'Schizophrenia' is given as:  Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder in which people interpret reality abnormally. Schizophrenia may result in some combination of hallucinations, delusions, and extremely disordered thinking and behavior that impairs daily functioning, and can be disabling. Being a psychology student, the disorders of the mind have always intrigued me. I always thought about how every person is wired differently and how each person copes with the trauma that he/she gets inflicted upon them during their lifetime.  One such person, I met during my summer vacation, was Rahul. He was my best friend's cousin. One peculiar thing about him was that he always used to remain quiet and immersed in his own world, without

Do You Like Girls?

By : May 19, 2020 Comments Off
She said it so flatly, as if it was another time and space completely, “Do you like girls?” I was sixteen, I think. Yea. Sixteen, and so far from my true self that at this present day I’d have to say that she was a ghost of some sort. A ghost of what’s left after adolescence, collecting any pieces of personality, however ill-fitting. How did the ghost respond? I think she said something like, ‘Sometimes.’ Which of course would be the most reasonable and literally factual response available to the ghost at the time. Which I suppose would have meant, “the best armored response that wasn’t aggressive or offensive.” Misleading? Maybe, but what could be expected? I mean this was probably the gayest human being I’d been within a few
