Frequently Asked Questions

What is MyUmbrella?

MyUmbrella is for members of the LGBTQ+ community who are looking for a creative outlet. Unlike other platforms, we invite members of the community who want to share their stories the opportunity to do so by joining our Writers Cohort. Their published work reminds us that we’re not alone as we think we are.

How do I join the cohort?

To join the cohort you need to simply fill out the Intake Form. It only takes two minutes to complete. Someone will get back to you shortly.

Do I need to be an accomplished writer?

Not at all. You just have to be able to put your thoughts on paper in a relatable way.

What if English isn’t my first language?

That’s no problem at all. We have writers from various countries where English is not their first language. All submitted work gets reviewed and edited before being published. We do our best to make your voice shine as brightly as possible.

Why can’t I just set up an account and start writing?

While other platforms allows anyone to quickly set up an account and publish as they please, we take a slightly different approach. We want to help you find and polish your voice as a writer as well as keep it the platform as a safe haven from trolls.

What can I write about?

We have various categories to choose from including freeform creative writing. With that said, we will not publish work that incites hate or violence.

Is there an app?

Yes. We have a mobile app is meant for anyone who wants to continue to build community outside of commenting on articles. We are working on connecting the articles to the app so that it will be updated in real time. Currently the app is solely on iOS devices.

How do I follow you on social media?

All of our profiles use the handle @MyUmbrellaHQ

Where are the rainbows?

While we understand the significance and symbolism that the flags represent, we decided not to integrate it into our branding to ensure the platform would be safe for viewing in all geo-political environments.

Who owns MyUmbrella?

MyUmbrella is 100% bootstrapped and owned by Angie, a queer woman of color.
